A gift of love or affection, Love Spoons are used for many occasions where romance is in the air, from engagements to weddings, anniversaries to birthdays, friendship or valentine, christenings and even farewell or parting gifts.
Giving gifts of handcrafted spoons to symbolise affection and love is a craft
tradition in Wales and was adopted by other Celtic countries and has its roots
in the 17th century. Love spoons are also part of Scandinavian and eastern
European tradition. The earliest example comes from Germany and dates back to 1664.
Certain symbols came to have specific meanings: bells for marriage, hearts for love, a lock for security, a diamond is for wealth, knotwork is for eternal love, the comma represents the soul and has the meaning of deep or great affection.
